This parasite invades red blood cells, propagates in them, and finally destroys them. The infection produces cycles of fever that characterize malaria. Malaria is distributed in tropical and subtropical zones, causing 610,000 deaths in 2022. At times, Japanese travelers get infected with malaria in endemic areas. If not promptly treated, malaria can be fatal.
