Schistosoma japonicum

Oriental blood flukes inhabit the intestinal veins of mammals. The effects can be fatal. The intermediate host snail Oncomelania nosophora was identified and eliminated in its endemic areas in Japan. That led to successful extermination of this fluke. The snail is now an endangered species. However, in other countries such as China and the Philippines, infection persists.
